[Editorial Note:
Callisto represents a safer alternative to high-rate atrazine applications and can allow you to either reduce or eliminate atrazine from your sweet corn herbicide program. The pre-emergence program Rich Bonanno mentions with Callisto, a low rate of atrazine and your normal grass herbicide, may cost you $15-$20 more per acre than your current herbicide program. However, it will reduce your use of chemicals capable of leaching to groundwater. Callisto also has a "plant-back" restriction of 18 months for most vegetables, and may be most appropriate for land where sweet corn will follow sweet corn, as it may restrict your crop rotation plan. The label also warns you not to apply this product to "white popcorn or ornamental Indian corn."
Part of being a good steward of the land and a good Sustainable Ag/IPM producer is realizing that not all the costs of using a pesticide are reflected in the price of the jug or package. It also involves weighing the risks and benefits as you make your decisions about which products to use in your operation. This information is meant to help you make informed decisions about pest control and land management and is not meant to be an endorsement of any particular company's product.]

Callisto Registered for Sweet Corn (Continued from page 1)
apply 3 ounces of Callisto along with a non-ionic surfactant. Crop oil concentrate should not be used, as it will increase the potential of corn injury. Corn can be any size up to 20 inches tall; however, weeds should be less than 3 inches tall.
Overall Precautions:
Do not apply more than 7.7 ounces of Callisto per acre in one season.
If there may be a need to apply both a preemergence and a postemergence spray, do not exceed 5 ounces preemergence so that there is still 2.7 ounces available postemergence.
See the label for additional precautions and more information on tank mixes, rates, and weeds controlled.
Callisto does not provide preemergence control of yellow nutsedge and provides only partial postemergence control. Preemergence control can be provided by atrazine plus either Dual or Lasso. Postemergence control can be provided by atrazine, Permit (halos ulfuron), Basagran (bentazon), or Formula 40 (2,4-D).
