Growing Degree Day (GDD) Accumulation (September 20, 2008)

I am sure that all of you are aware that there is a potential that we may be getting significant rain as this week progresses--I would suggest one keep checking at the National Hurricane  website.  I just want to warn those with ripe crops, and I saw many this past weekend that could have been harvested already, that several days of precipitation can lead to serious losses or total crop loss so weigh this in your decision as to whether you should harvest or not.  Ripe fruit split readily and moulds will have easy entry into the fruit.  Mother nature does not pay attention to our schedules.  I know that everyone is trying to achieve maximum brix and ripeness, but unfortunately, it isn't as simple as that so you might want to hedge your risks.
