Connecticut Apple Marketing Board Recipes

Every year, the ten winners of the Connecticut Fair Association's Apple Pie Contest compete for the right to bake in the New England Best Two-Crusted Apple Pie Contest. Throughout the fair season, hundreds of apple pies are submitted at local fairs for judging. The winner of each fair's contest competes at the Fair Association's Annual Meeting and the ten finalists from this contest are given the opportunity to compete in the Connecticut Day Final at the New England Apple Pie Contest in West Brookfield, Massachusetts. The two top winners return for one more day of baking and compete against the finalists from each New England state.

Since 1988, the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, the Connecticut Apple Marketing Board, Connecticut chain stores and wholesalers, and the Fair Association have joined the Salem Cross Inn in sponsoring the contest to promote Connecticut apples. Three states have their final at the picturesque inn, and there are at least one or two representatives from each New England state who compete for cash awards and prizes in addition to the title of "Best Two-Crusted Apple Pie" baker. Judges are experienced in food preparation or are food critics. Pies are judged as follows : Overall appearance, 40% , Flavor, 40% , Crust 10% , Texture 10%.
