INVASIVE PLANT SYMPOSIUM "Cherish Our Natural Heritage: Managing Invasives to Promote Natives" Convened by the Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group Wednesday, October 1, 2008 University of Connecticut, Storrs
On Wednesday, October 1, 2008, the Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group (CIPWG) will present “Cherish Our Natural Heritage: Managing Invasives to Promote Natives”, a one-day symposium at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. All who are interested in invasive plant issues are invited to attend. This symposium seeks to draw together members of conservation organizations, town commissions, public works departments, nursery and landscape professions, landscape architects, gardeners, and the public into a discussion of the challenges presented by invasive plants and how we can promote natives by managing invasives.
The Keynote Speaker will be Doug Tallamy, Professor and Chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology from the University of Delaware. Doug recently published Bringing Nature Home; How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens.
Morning presentations will highlight new invasive plants, legislative updates, and invasive news from a local and regional perspective.
Concurrent afternoon session topics will include: · Grasslands · Forest understory (wildflowers, shrubs) · Wetland/Riparian/Aquatic habitat · Non-plant invaders · Organic control · Management practices
A poster session and other educational exhibits will also be featured. Pesticide Recertification Credits and a variety of continuing education credits (CEU's, etc.) will be offered. Subject material appropriate for 6 continuing education credits for Landscape Architects in Connecticut.
