Tribute to
Dr. Richard A. Ashley
Professor Emeritus
Former IPM Coordinator
born March 1941; died March 2008

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Department of Plant Science and the Cooperative Extension System have suffered a loss with the death of our friend and colleague, Dr. Richard A. Ashley.

As Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Coordinator, Dr. Ashley was the visionary behind the IPM website.  Our website first went online in 1997 to provide a few IPM fact sheets and images.  Dr. Ashley was very enthused and gratified by your response to the site.  Many of you linked to our website, added us to your favorites and asked questions by email.    In response to your viewership, Dr. Ashley thought of many more ways to present information about the logic and sense of using IPM methods.  We added weekly pest messages, online short courses, games and more fact sheets, images and publications.

Your interest in our site provided the opportunity for Dr. Ashley to develop and distribute the Integrated Pest Management Curriculum for Connecticut Schools which provides information about sustainable environmental stewardship to students and youth groups in grades K through 12, a project on which he continued working even after his retirement in 2003.

Many of you involved in agriculture knew Dr. Ashley personally and share our grief in his passing.  All of us suffer the loss of his knowledge and experience, guidance and advice.

Life’s race well run,
Life’s work well done,
Life’s victory won,
Now cometh rest.
