  • leaves alternate, of variable shapes: right hand mitten, left-hand mitten, 3-lobed and entire
  • leaves bright green, vividly colored in fall
  • leaves and stems aromatic when crushed
  • stems green-red (depending on exposure), smooth, sweet to taste
  • buds green, imbricate, divergent, small
  • fruit dark blue, borne on a red stalk
  • bark with ropey ridges/furrow, corky, distinctive
  • habit a small flat-topped tree with twisted branches
  • plant suckers readily and small sprouts will be found in colony
