- leaves alternate, of variable shapes: right hand mitten, left-hand
mitten, 3-lobed and entire
- leaves bright green, vividly colored in fall
- leaves and stems aromatic when crushed
- stems green-red (depending on exposure), smooth, sweet to taste
- buds green, imbricate, divergent, small
- fruit dark blue, borne on a red stalk
- bark with ropey ridges/furrow, corky, distinctive
- habit a small flat-topped tree with twisted branches
- plant suckers readily and small sprouts will be found in colony
