  • leaves alternate (appear whorled at branch tips), very large (to 2" long), oblong
  • leaves dark green, yellow-brown in autumn
  • stems thick, little-branched, coarse, greenish
  • buds long, smooth, becoming narrow at tip
  • flowers very large, white with purplish base
  • fruit a cone-like aggregate of seeds, with bright red seeds
  • bark smooth and gray
  • habit is a small tree with thick, coarse branches
  • plant has a very tropical appearance
