  • leaves alternate, elliptic-lanceolate, serrate margin
  • leaves have an oblique base, glossy green color
  • leaves smaller than U. americana
  • buds small, clack, globular
  • stems thin, gray-green, smooth
  • bark thick and corky, with fissures
  • flowers and fruit usually not seen
  • habit is a large, irregular tree with open habit
  • branchlets on perimeter of tree are often pendulous
  • tree is messy, with debris such as twigs and branches beneath canopy
