  • leaves alternate, elliptic to lanceolate, smooth-edged
  • leaves dark green and glossy above, silvery beneath
  • terminal buds long, green, smooth, curved
  • stems greenish, thin, smooth
  • flowers white, fragrant, in early summer
  • fruit a conical arrangement of follicles, becoming brown
  • seeds bright orange-red, persistent, ripening over an extended period
  • bark smooth, gray
  • habit a large shrub or small rounded tree
