- leaves alternate, elliptic to lanceolate, smooth-edged
- leaves dark green and glossy above, silvery beneath
- terminal buds long, green, smooth, curved
- stems greenish, thin, smooth
- flowers white, fragrant, in early summer
- fruit a conical arrangement of follicles, becoming brown
- seeds bright orange-red, persistent, ripening over an extended period
- bark smooth, gray
- habit a large shrub or small rounded tree
