- leaves alternate, large, rough-textured
- leaves have serrated edge, oblique leaf base
- leaves dull green, little fall color
- stems smooth, brown, brittle, zig-zag
- branches weep to form an umbrella
- buds conical, pointed, divergent, brown
- flowers and fruit are usually not seen
- habit is a small grafted tree with weeping habit
- graft union is usually seen on trunk as a swollen area or a transition
in bark texture
