  • leaves small, alternate, elliptic-ovate
  • leaves have serrated margins and oblique bases
  • leaves glossy green; reddish-orange in fall
  • buds very small, brown
  • stems slender, gray-brown, usually smooth
  • flowers and fruit not usually seen
  • bark exfoliates to reveal mottled patches, often with orange lenticels
  • habit is a medium-large tree
  • form is upright and vase-shaped, with thin branches
