- leaves small, alternate, elliptic-ovate
- leaves have serrated margins and oblique bases
- leaves glossy green; reddish-orange in fall
- buds very small, brown
- stems slender, gray-brown, usually smooth
- flowers and fruit not usually seen
- bark exfoliates to reveal mottled patches, often with orange lenticels
- habit is a medium-large tree
- form is upright and vase-shaped, with thin branches
