  • leaves alternate, broad ovate, "wedge-shaped"
  • leaves dark green above, grayish beneath, vivid fall color
  • leaves have coarse dentations on the upper half
  • young stems have a prominent zig-zag
  • foliar buds small, stalked, with two scales
  • flower buds larger, rounded, pubescent
  • flowers early, white, bottle-brush spikes
  • fruit is a capsule produced in a spike
  • habit is a medium to large shrub with upright habit.
