- leaves have coarse crenation towards tip
- foliar buds less pubescent than H. mollis
- flower buds stalked, in axillary clusters
- young stems less pubescent than H. mollis
- flowers yellow, in fall, with stringy petals
- fruit is a capsule, green-brown
- habit is a large shrub with thick, spreading branches
