- leaves alternate, obovate to elliptic, smooth margined
- leaves dark green in summer, yellow-brown in fall
- leaves smaller than M. x soulangiana
- flower buds large, visible all winter, covered densely with long,
white hairs
- flower buds smaller than M. x soulangiana, but more
densely hairy
- stems brown, smooth
- flowers star-like, white-pink, before M. x soulangiana
- fruit a twisted mass of seeds, some swollen
- habit a large shrub or small tree
- habit denser than M. x soulangiana, more shrub-like
