  • leaves large, unusual, roughly square-shaped with a truncate tip, 4 lobed
  • leaves alternate, bright green, yellow in autumn
  • buds valvate, flattened, large, like a duck's bill
  • flowers large, in mid-spring, resemble a cream and orange tulip
  • fruit is an aggregate of samaras with a central woody axis than persists through the winter
  • bark gray-brown with ridges and furrows
  • habit is a large tree with a massive, straight trunk
  • trees often lack lower branches
