- leaves alternate, star-shaped, 5-lobed, pointed
- leaves glossy green in summer, vividly colored in fall
- terminal bud large, shiny, green-red
- twigs bear corky wings when young
- stems aromatic when crushed
- flowers green, inconspicuous, early spring
- fruit is a dangling cluster of spiky follicles
- fruit turns from green to brown and is persistent
- bark gray-brown, furrowed
- habit is a medium-large rounded tree
