  • leaves alternate, obovate, to 6" long, simple with a smooth margin
  • leaves medium green, dull textured, larger than M. stellata
  • flower buds large, present all winter, covered with silky hairs
  • flower buds larger than M. stellata, with shorter hairs
  • foliar buds small, divergent from stem
  • stems brown with gray lenticels
  • bark on old stems smooth, gray
  • flower in early spring, pink, like tulips or goblets
  • fruit oddly shaped and irregular, with red seed swellings
  • habit is a small open tree, branching low to the ground
  • habit is more tree-like than M. stellata
