Located on east side of Beach Hall.
- leaves alternate, obovate, to 6" long, simple with a smooth
margin
- leaves medium green, dull textured, larger than M. stellata
- flower buds large, present all winter, covered with silky hairs
- flower buds larger than M. stellata, with shorter hairs
- foliar buds small, divergent from stem
- stems brown with gray lenticels
- bark on old stems smooth, gray
- flower in early spring, pink, like tulips or goblets
- fruit oddly shaped and irregular, with red seed swellings
- habit is a small open tree, branching low to the ground
- habit is more tree-like than M. stellata
