- leaves opposite, ovate-elliptic, to 6" long
- leaves dark green above, gray-green beneath
- leaf petiole attached to raised "platform"; surrounds
bud
- buds hidden by leaf petiole base
- buds superposed, brown, hairy
- flowers maroon red, fragrant, spring
- fruit persistent, misshapen pod like a hanging bat
- habit is a large, rounded shrub
- plant is aromatic; leaves sweet when crushed
