  • leaves opposite, ovate-elliptic, to 6" long
  • leaves dark green above, gray-green beneath
  • leaf petiole attached to raised "platform"; surrounds bud
  • buds hidden by leaf petiole base
  • buds superposed, brown, hairy
  • flowers maroon red, fragrant, spring
  • fruit persistent, misshapen pod like a hanging bat
  • habit is a large, rounded shrub
  • plant is aromatic; leaves sweet when crushed
