- leaves opposite, ovate-elliptic, acuminate, large and elongated
- leaves dark green, with pubescence on surface, with smooth margins
- buds imbricate, oblong, divergent, pubescent
- stems brown, pubescent when young
- flowers white/yellow, tubular, in axillary pairs, after L. tatarica
- fruit is a red berry, ripening in early fall, held tight to stem
- bark has "ropey" texture on old stems, with distinct lines
- habit is a very large, upright spreading multi-stemmed shrub
- plant has escaped from cultivation and may be found naturalized
as a weed
