  • leaves opposite, ovate-elliptic, acuminate, large and elongated
  • leaves dark green, with pubescence on surface, with smooth margins
  • buds imbricate, oblong, divergent, pubescent
  • stems brown, pubescent when young
  • flowers white/yellow, tubular, in axillary pairs, after L. tatarica
  • fruit is a red berry, ripening in early fall, held tight to stem
  • bark has "ropey" texture on old stems, with distinct lines
  • habit is a very large, upright spreading multi-stemmed shrub
  • plant has escaped from cultivation and may be found naturalized as a weed
