  • leaves dark green, with a smooth margin
  • buds small, imbricate, appressed to stem
  • stems green-purple when young, turning gray, smooth
  • stems bear a light pubescence, unlike L. vulgare
  • flowers small, creamy white, in panicles, fragrant
  • fruit is a small round drupe, green maturing to black
  • fruit pedicels have pubescence, unlike L. vulgare
  • habit is a large shrub or small tree, multi-stemmed
  • plant often forms a vase shape with age
