- leaves opposite, simple, elliptic-oblong
- leaves dark green, with a smooth margin
- buds small, imbricate, appressed to stem
- stems green-purple when young, turning gray, smooth
- stems bear a light pubescence, unlike L. vulgare
- flowers small, creamy white, in panicles, fragrant
- fruit is a small round drupe, green maturing to black
- fruit pedicels have pubescence, unlike L. vulgare
- habit is a large shrub or small tree, multi-stemmed
- plant often forms a vase shape with age
