- Leaves opposite, pinnate compound, with 7 to 11 leaflets
- leaflets ovate-oblong, dark green, serrated edge, pubescent beneath
- buds small, imbricate, triangular
- stems smooth, brown
- stems develop aerial rootlets between nodes
- flowers tubular, orange, in summer, in terminal clusters
- fruit is a elongated pod-like capsule, to 5" long
- habit is a vigorous vine with root-like holdfasts and stems that
twist around supports
