  • Leaves opposite, pinnate compound, with 7 to 11 leaflets
  • leaflets ovate-oblong, dark green, serrated edge, pubescent beneath
  • buds small, imbricate, triangular
  • stems smooth, brown
  • stems develop aerial rootlets between nodes
  • flowers tubular, orange, in summer, in terminal clusters
  • fruit is a elongated pod-like capsule, to 5" long
  • habit is a vigorous vine with root-like holdfasts and stems that twist around supports
