- leaves opposite, ovate, semi-evergreen to deciduous
- leaves dark green, with smooth margins
- buds small, imbricate, superposed, pubescent
- stems smooth, reddish brown to brown, with a fine pubescence
- stems twine around supports to form a vigorous vine
- flowers white-yellow, tubular, fragrant, in early summer, in axillary
pairs
- fruit is a black berry, persistent, borne tight to stem
- habit is a vigorous twining vine that twists around any available
support
- plant is an escaped weed that may be found naturalized in the landscape
and waste places
- plant is tardily deciduous, holding some leaves late
