  • leaves opposite, ovate, semi-evergreen to deciduous
  • leaves dark green, with smooth margins
  • buds small, imbricate, superposed, pubescent
  • stems smooth, reddish brown to brown, with a fine pubescence
  • stems twine around supports to form a vigorous vine
  • flowers white-yellow, tubular, fragrant, in early summer, in axillary pairs
  • fruit is a black berry, persistent, borne tight to stem
  • habit is a vigorous twining vine that twists around any available support
  • plant is an escaped weed that may be found naturalized in the landscape and waste places
  • plant is tardily deciduous, holding some leaves late
