Located on side of Budds building in garden by bench.

  • leaves opposite, ovate, acuminate, with serrated margin
  • leaves deep green, turning red in fall; veins are deeply indented, giving leaf a pleated look
  • flower buds valvate, fat at base, gray-brown
  • foliar buds naked, pubescent, light brown
  • stems gray, smooth, with orangeish lenticels
  • flowers white, in flat-topped clusters, borne profusely along branches, in mid spring
  • flower clusters contain outer ring of large sterile flowers and inner mass of small, fertile florets ("lacecap effect")
  • fruit is an oblong drupe, red changing to black, taken early by birds
  • habit is distinct, a large multi-stemmed shrub with obvious horizontal branching into definite layers
  • plant bears small paired branchlets in pairs at nodes of stems, forming a "fishbone effect"
