  • leaves opposite, large, evergreen or semi-evergreen, oblong-lanceolate
  • leaves dark rich green, glossy, with deeply indented veins
  • leaves have smooth margin and are gray tomentose underneath
  • flower buds borne in a flat, expanded cluster (cyme) visible in winter
  • foliar buds naked, large, orange-brown, furry, with small modified leaves
  • stems thick, coarse, fuzzy when young and smooth with age
  • flowers yellow-white, in flat-topped cyme, in mid-spring
  • flowers may open precociously in fall
  • fruit is an oval drupe, red changing to black, often rarely seen
  • habit is a large multi-stemmed shrub with an upright, open habit
  • plant may lose foliage in strong winters and/or be damaged
