Located on side of Manchester Hall facing lake.
- leaves opposite, large, evergreen or semi-evergreen, oblong-lanceolate
- leaves dark rich green, glossy, with deeply indented veins
- leaves have smooth margin and are gray tomentose underneath
- flower buds borne in a flat, expanded cluster (cyme) visible in
winter
- foliar buds naked, large, orange-brown, furry, with small modified
leaves
- stems thick, coarse, fuzzy when young and smooth with age
- flowers yellow-white, in flat-topped cyme, in mid-spring
- flowers may open precociously in fall
- fruit is an oval drupe, red changing to black, often rarely seen
- habit is a large multi-stemmed shrub with an upright, open habit
- plant may lose foliage in strong winters and/or be damaged
