  • leaves opposite, ovate to elliptic, acuminate, with fine marginal serrations, with flattened winged petiole
  • leaves glossy green; developing reddish fall color
  • flower buds distinctive, long, fat at the base and tapering to an elongated point, like a "duck bill"
  • foliar buds valvate, long, pointed, curved
  • stems brown, smooth, rounded
  • flowers creamy white, in flat topped clusters, in mid-spring
  • fruit is a oval drupe, colored blue-black, often shriveling like a raisin with age
  • habit is a large shrub or small tree with an open habit, usually multi-stemmed
