  • leaves opposite, ovate to rounded, with fine teeth on margin
  • leaves dark green, with reddish fall color
  • buds similar to V. dilatatum, imbricate with reddish brown scales
  • flower buds and foliar buds similar
  • stems brown to gray, glabrous and smooth (primary feature to contrast with V. dilatatum)
  • flowers white, in a flat-topped cluster, in mid-spring
  • flower pedicels lack fuzz or pubescence
  • fruit is a red drupe, perhaps slightly darker and larger than V. dilatatum), persistent
  • habit is an upright-rounded shrub, medium to large size
  • plant may become leggy at base
