  • leaves opposite, ovate, minutely toothed
  • leaves dull dark green; red in fall
  • flower buds large, terminal, present all winter
  • flower buds in rounded cluster, often with pair of foliar buds on each side like ears
  • foliar buds naked, fuzzy, tightly clasping leaves
  • stems gray-brown, pubescent when young; fissuring with age
  • flowers pinkish in bud, opening white and fragrant, in rounded clusters, in early spring
  • fruit is a oblong drupe, small, red to black, not persistent or showy
  • habit is a rounded shrub with stiff spreading branches
  • plant is smaller than many viburnums
