- leaves opposite, elliptic-ovate, minutely serrate
- leaves dark green, turning red-purple in fall
- flower buds often on tips of twigs, valvate, gray, with a swollen
base
- foliar buds valvate, gray, thin and appressed
- stems gray-brown, smooth
- bark on old trunks becomes rough and scaly
- flowers creamy white, in small flat-topped clusters, in mid-spring
- fruit is an oval drupe, pink-rose turning bloomy black, persisting
into fall, taken by birds
- habit is a large shrub or small tree, developing a rounded crown
that is often leggy at base
- plant may be multi-stemmed or a single-stem tree
- plant has a stiff habit, unlike other viburnums
