  • leaves opposite, simple, with 3 distinct lobes, lobes have rounded points, petiole has glands near blade
  • leaves glossy dark green, usually with poor fall color
  • buds valvate, rounded, smooth, red-brown, plump
  • flower buds and foliar buds are similar
  • stems gray-brown, smooth, thick and stout
  • flowers white, in flat-topped cluster, in early-mid spring
  • flower cluster has outer ring of large white blooms and inner cluster of small fertile flowers ("lacecap effect")
  • fruit is a rounded red drupe, persistent, large, often persisting and becoming a red raisin
  • habit is a large, rounded, multi-stemmed shrub with arching branches
