  • leaves opposite, obovate-oblong, large, coarsely serrate, with deeply impressed veins
  • leaves glossy dark green, with poor fall coloring
  • flower buds large, valvate, often on stem tip, brown, slightly fuzzy
  • foliar buds valvate, brown, smaller, appressed
  • stems thick, gray, slightly pubescent
  • flowers creamy white, in large flat-topped clusters, in mid-late spring
  • fruit is an oval drupe, red becoming black, gone by late fall
  • fruit pedicel structure is pinkish-red and persists after fruit are gone
  • bark becomes rough and plated on older stems
  • habit is a very large shrub or small tree, with an open habit and rigid branches
  • plant is the largest viburnum covered here
