- leaves opposite, oval-elliptic, often with irregular rounded lobes
- leaves small, blue-green, with little fall color
- buds very small, red-brown
- stems slender, brown-gray, slightly pubescent
- flowers tubular, small, pink, in small spikes at stem tips, in late
spring
- fruit is a distinctive ID feature, a round berry-drupe colored bright
white
- fruit is clustered and often lumpy; persists but often discolors
- habit is a small to medium shrub with fine twigs and a suckering,
straggling habit
- plant has upright, arching shoots and appears ratty in winter
