  • leaves opposite, oval-elliptic, often with irregular rounded lobes
  • leaves small, blue-green, with little fall color
  • buds very small, red-brown
  • stems slender, brown-gray, slightly pubescent
  • flowers tubular, small, pink, in small spikes at stem tips, in late spring
  • fruit is a distinctive ID feature, a round berry-drupe colored bright white
  • fruit is clustered and often lumpy; persists but often discolors
  • habit is a small to medium shrub with fine twigs and a suckering, straggling habit
  • plant has upright, arching shoots and appears ratty in winter
