Located on side of fraternity house behind Arjona.

  • leaves opposite, ovate-oblong, acuminate, with minute serrations
  • leaves medium to dark green, with poor fall color
  • buds small, imbricate, appressed, brown
  • stems gray-brown, often with a row of black hairs running from node to node
  • flowers tubular, solitary or in small groups, from leaf axils, in late spring and sporadically through fall
  • flowers usually reddish-pink, may be white or other colors depending on cultivar
  • fruit is a brown pointed capsule ("bottle" shaped) with two valves, splitting and persisting in fall
  • habit is a medium to large shrub with a spreading habit
  • plant is dense, with branches that may arch to the ground
  • plant appears gaunt and ragged in winter, with twiggy brown branches that look lifeless
