Located at top of Great Lawn near flagpole and old chemistry building.
- leaves alternate, 4"-9" long, with 5-9 deep lobes that
are rounded
- leaves generally larger than Q. robur
- leaf sinuses (between lobes) extend nearly to the midrib, deeper
than Q. robur
- leaf lobes lack any pointed serrations
- leaves are blue-green, reddish in fall
- leaf base is very narrow
- buds small, clustered at twig tip, imbricate, red-brown
- stems brown-purple, angled, sometimes with a bluish bloom
- fruit an acorn, without stalk, covered 1/3 of length by involucre
(compare to Q. robur, with stalked acorns)
- bark distinct light gray, with small blocks or fissures/furrows
- habit is a pyramidal to open-rounded large tree
