Located at top of Great Lawn near flagpole and old chemistry building.

  • leaves alternate, 4"-9" long, with 5-9 deep lobes that are rounded
  • leaves generally larger than Q. robur
  • leaf sinuses (between lobes) extend nearly to the midrib, deeper than Q. robur
  • leaf lobes lack any pointed serrations
  • leaves are blue-green, reddish in fall
  • leaf base is very narrow
  • buds small, clustered at twig tip, imbricate, red-brown
  • stems brown-purple, angled, sometimes with a bluish bloom
  • fruit an acorn, without stalk, covered 1/3 of length by involucre (compare to Q. robur, with stalked acorns)
  • bark distinct light gray, with small blocks or fissures/furrows
  • habit is a pyramidal to open-rounded large tree
