  • leaves alternate, simple, oblong with a pointed tip, cordate base
  • leaves glossy bright green
  • buds small, brown
  • stems smooth, with prominent spines
  • stems release white sap when broken
  • bark scaly, fissured, ropey texture
  • inner bark is colored orange
  • fruit is a large, brain-like, yellow-green aggregate fruit
  • habit is a large shrub to small tree
