- leaves alternate, simple, oblong with a pointed tip, cordate base
- leaves glossy bright green
- buds small, brown
- stems smooth, with prominent spines
- stems release white sap when broken
- bark scaly, fissured, ropey texture
- inner bark is colored orange
- fruit is a large, brain-like, yellow-green aggregate fruit
- habit is a large shrub to small tree
