- leaves alternate, with 3-7 rounded lobes at the end of veins
- leaf sinuses are very shallow (compare to Q. alba)
- leaves are generally smaller than Q. alba (2"-5"
long)
- leaves often have distinctive ear-like auriculate appendage at base
of blade
- buds rather large, plump-rounded, red-brown
- stems smooth, red-brown, angled
- fruit an acorn, on a stem (unlike Q. alba)
- fruit long (to 1"), covered by cup to about 1/3 of length
- bark furrowed, gray-black
- habit a large, rounded tree
