- leaves alternate, ovate, ending in acuminate tip
- leaves glossy deep green, with 10-15 veins (more than F. sylvatica)
- leaf veins more pronounced than F. sylvatica, ending in point
with bristle tip
- leaf margins serrated, unlike F. sylvatica
- buds large, narrow, conical, pointed
- stems thin, zig-zag
- bark smooth, silvery-gray
- fruit is a nut enclosed by a prominent prickly husk (involucre)
- habit is a large tree with spreading branches
- tree has a "muscular"-look, like an elephant's foot
