  • leaves alternate, ovate, ending in acuminate tip
  • leaves glossy deep green, with 10-15 veins (more than F. sylvatica)
  • leaf veins more pronounced than F. sylvatica, ending in point with bristle tip
  • leaf margins serrated, unlike F. sylvatica
  • buds large, narrow, conical, pointed
  • stems thin, zig-zag
  • bark smooth, silvery-gray
  • fruit is a nut enclosed by a prominent prickly husk (involucre)
  • habit is a large tree with spreading branches
  • tree has a "muscular"-look, like an elephant's foot
