  • leaves alternate, simple and unlobed to 6" long
  • leaves unusual among campus oaks in being simple
  • leaves glossy deep green, reddish in fall
  • leaves are often held through winter (brown)
  • buds imbricate, sharp-pointed, brown
  • stems angled, green-brown, glossy
  • fruit an acorn, very small, with reddish cup covering about half the fruit
  • habit is a medium-size tree, pyramidal-upright
  • lower branches of tree often droop down (similar to Q. palustris)
