- leaves alternate (often appearing whorled at stem tips)
- leaves oblong-elliptic, deep green, leathery, with some points toward
tip
- leaves aromatic when crushed
- leaves may be semi-evergreen, but are usually deciduous
- buds small, darker than stem, arranged all around stems
- buds also clustered at stem tip
- stems & bark smooth and gray
- fruit is a glaucous blue berry, appearing tightly along stems
- fruit is only found on female plants
- habit is an upright, mounded shrub
- plant suckers to form colonies
