  • leaves alternate (often appearing whorled at stem tips)
  • leaves oblong-elliptic, deep green, leathery, with some points toward tip
  • leaves aromatic when crushed
  • leaves may be semi-evergreen, but are usually deciduous
  • buds small, darker than stem, arranged all around stems
  • buds also clustered at stem tip
  • stems & bark smooth and gray
  • fruit is a glaucous blue berry, appearing tightly along stems
  • fruit is only found on female plants
  • habit is an upright, mounded shrub
  • plant suckers to form colonies
