  • leaves alternate, ovate, with jagged serrations along margin
  • leaves glossy green in summer, red-orange in fall
  • leaves have oblique leaf base
  • buds imbricate, pointed, plump, diverging from stem
  • flower and fruit usually not seen
  • stems brown, slightly hairy with age, smooth when older
  • bark distinctive, orange-brown with horizontal lenticels
  • bark peels with age to some degree; attractive
  • habit vase shaped, distinctly upright with lateral branches grouped close together
