  • buds small, imbricate

  • stems release white latex when broken
  • fruit resembles a raspberry, turning from green to purple
  • bark is rough, with irregular ridges and furrows
  • habit is an irregular, rounded tree
  • tree is messy, often dropping litter
  • tree is weedy, often appearing as volunteer seedlings in waste places
