- leaves alternate, deep green, serrated margin
- leaves are variable in shape, can be "mitten-shaped" with
0-3 lobes, similar to Sassafras albidum
- buds small, imbricate
- stems slender, smooth
- stems release white latex when broken
- fruit resembles a raspberry, turning from green to purple
- bark is rough, with irregular ridges and furrows
- habit is an irregular, rounded tree
- tree is messy, often dropping litter
- tree is weedy, often appearing as volunteer seedlings in waste places
