  • leaves alternate, with 7-11 lobes that have many points
  • leaf lobes are wider than Q. palustris
  • leaf sinuses are not as deeply cut as Q. palustris
  • leaves glossy dark green, reddish in fall
  • buds imbricate, somewhat pointed, red-brown, hairy
  • stems smooth, green to red-brown
  • bark brown-black, with ridges and deep furrows
  • fruit an acorn, larger than Q. palustris, covered at the base by cup
  • fruit cup (involucre) is thick and rounded, protruding beyond fruit
  • habit is a rounded tree, without the drooping lower branches of Q. palustris
