- leaves alternate, with 7-11 lobes that have many points
- leaf lobes are wider than Q. palustris
- leaf sinuses are not as deeply cut as Q. palustris
- leaves glossy dark green, reddish in fall
- buds imbricate, somewhat pointed, red-brown, hairy
- stems smooth, green to red-brown
- bark brown-black, with ridges and deep furrows
- fruit an acorn, larger than Q. palustris, covered at the
base by cup
- fruit cup (involucre) is thick and rounded, protruding beyond fruit
- habit is a rounded tree, without the drooping lower branches of
Q. palustris
