  • leaves alternate, odd pinnate, with 5 or 7 leaflets
  • leaflets deep green, serrated margins, elliptical
  • terminal bud large, imbricate, brown
  • fruit is a nut enclosed in a 4-valved, green husk
  • flowers are catkins in spring
  • bark peels in long vertical plates
  • bark plates are attached at the center, free at both ends; hence the "shaggy" look
  • habit is a large tree with a straight trunk and shape that is often irregular
