  • leaves alternate, with 5-7 lobes, lobes have many sharp points
  • leaf sinuses (between lobes) are U-shaped
  • leaf sinuses extend nearly to the midrib, giving leaf a dissected, finely textured look
  • buds imbricate, sharp-pointed, clustered at stem tip
  • stems smooth, slender, green-brown
  • bark rather smooth, gray, with shallow furrows with age
  • fruit is an acorn, small and rounded, with a thin cup that only covers very top of fruit
  • habit is pyramidal with a strong central leader
  • branching pattern is very distinctive: lower branches droop, middle branches are horizontal and upper branches ascend
