European White Birch
Betulaceae
Located on back side of Budds Bldg.
- leaves alternate, broad ovate to diamond-like, coming to a tip
- leaves lustrous dark green, serrated margin
- buds imbricate, pointed, curved, brown
- stems smooth, brown
- flowers alligned in yellowish catkins
- fruit are nutlets arranged in a catkin
- bark brownish when young, becoming whitish with age
- bark is not as strong white as B. papyrifera, plus it does
not peel
- bark becomes fissured with age, showing black regions
- trees often show a black base when old, unlike B. papyrifera
- tree is pyramidal, with distinctive pendulous outer branchlets
