  • leaves alternate, broad ovate to diamond-like, coming to a tip
  • leaves lustrous dark green, serrated margin
  • buds imbricate, pointed, curved, brown
  • stems smooth, brown
  • flowers alligned in yellowish catkins
  • fruit are nutlets arranged in a catkin
  • bark brownish when young, becoming whitish with age
  • bark is not as strong white as B. papyrifera, plus it does not peel
  • bark becomes fissured with age, showing black regions
  • trees often show a black base when old, unlike B. papyrifera
  • tree is pyramidal, with distinctive pendulous outer branchlets
