  • leaves alternate, triangular, coming to long point
  • leaves glossy green, with serrated edge
  • leaves have different shape than B. papyrifera
  • buds imbricate, pointed, brown
  • flowers arranged in terminal catkins
  • fruit are nutlets in green catkin
  • bark red-brown when young, becoming chalky white
  • bark is more gray than B. papyrifera and does not peal
  • bark develops distinct black triangles below branch attachments
  • habit is a small tree, irregular, often multi-trunked or colonial
