Both mature tree and young specimens located near small pond and
new chemistry building.
- leaves alternate, diamond-shaped or trianglular with coarse serrations
- leaves glossy green, with a wedge-shaped base
- buds pointed, imbricate, reddish-brown
- stems smooth, reddish-brown
- flowers arranged in catkins over winter and spring
- bark is distinctive, peeling when young to reveal patches of pink,
salmon, brown, etc.
- bark becomes brown and blocky with age
- habit is a medium- to large-sized tree
