  • leaves alternate, diamond-shaped or trianglular with coarse serrations
  • leaves glossy green, with a wedge-shaped base
  • buds pointed, imbricate, reddish-brown
  • stems smooth, reddish-brown
  • flowers arranged in catkins over winter and spring
  • bark is distinctive, peeling when young to reveal patches of pink, salmon, brown, etc.
  • bark becomes brown and blocky with age
  • habit is a medium- to large-sized tree
