- leaves alternate, ovate-rounded, serrated margin
- leaves medium green
- leaves have rounded base, unlike B. nigra
- stems smooth, with lighter dots
- flowers borne in yellowish terminal catkins
- fruit are nutlets in a greenish catkin
- bark peels to reveal pinkish-orange under layers
- bark becomes layered in chunks with age
- habit is a small to medium rounded tree
