  • leaves alternate, ovate-rounded, serrated margin
  • leaves medium green
  • leaves have rounded base, unlike B. nigra
  • stems smooth, with lighter dots
  • flowers borne in yellowish terminal catkins
  • fruit are nutlets in a greenish catkin
  • bark peels to reveal pinkish-orange under layers
  • bark becomes layered in chunks with age
  • habit is a small to medium rounded tree
