- leaves alternate, simple, fairly long, oblong/obovate
- leaves dark green, glossy, with finely serrated margin
- leaves with pointed tip, narrow base
- foliar buds imbricate, downy, coming to a point
- flower buds large, round, green, smooth, clustered at stem tip
- stems smooth, brown, finely pubescent when young
- flowers showy, large, cup-like with white petals and orange stamens
- flowers present in late summer and fall
- fruit a brown, round capsule starting green and drying brown
- bark brown, smooth when young, with fine lighter striations
- habit is a small tree or large shrub with rounded, open crown
- habit may be single-stem or multi-trunked
