  • leaves alternate, small, three-lobed, ovate-rhombic
  • leaves dark green, with rough teeth
  • leaves often have pair of persistent needle-like stipules at base
  • buds not seen; indicated by stem swelling
  • stems smooth, gray
  • flowers present often until frost
  • flowers round with prominent central stamens along pistil, color varies from white, pink and blue
  • flowers solitary, often crowded at stem tip
  • fruit is a capsule splitting into five parts, persistent
  • habit is an upright, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree
  • plant looks gaunt and coarse in winter
