- leaves alternate, ovate-rhombic, serrated edge
- leaves dark green, lighter beneath
- leaves pointed tip, wedge-shaped base
- buds imbricate, brown, appressed
- stems smooth, red-brown
- flowers arranged in yellowish catkins
- fruit are nutlets in greenish catkins
- bark is stark white, smooth
- bark peels in sheets, unlike B. pendula
- bark is white to the ground, unlike B. pendula
- habit is a medium-sized tree, often multi-trunked
