  • leaves alternate, ovate-rhombic, serrated edge
  • leaves dark green, lighter beneath
  • leaves pointed tip, wedge-shaped base
  • buds imbricate, brown, appressed
  • stems smooth, red-brown
  • flowers arranged in yellowish catkins
  • fruit are nutlets in greenish catkins
  • bark is stark white, smooth
  • bark peels in sheets, unlike B. pendula
  • bark is white to the ground, unlike B. pendula
  • habit is a medium-sized tree, often multi-trunked
